Review: "No One's Angel" by Kelly Walker

Yes, I know, I said that I would not have posted much this week, so SURPRISE, I wrote a review! 😉
Turning serious, this book attracted me right from the start for the cover, but I must say that I decided to read it only after reading the plot. It is an new release and unfortunately (for Italians) is only available in English.
I received this book thanks to NetGalley and All Night Reads in exchange for an honest opinion.

Tess used to spend more hours than she’d care to admit playing her favorite computer game, using the nickname Angel. She could pretend her life was different, and she could pretend Arion was just a friend. But a girl needs more to keep her warm at night than pixels, and she traded her virtual heaven for a real-life hell. Now she’s on the run from a past she won’t talk about, and the only place she has to go is the doorstep of the friend she’s never actually met.

When Angel disappeared from their nightly games, it nearly destroyed Arion. He threw himself into work and women, but he can’t help knowing the one-night stands will never compare to the angel who haunts his dreams. At first, when she shows up soaking wet and scared-shitless on his doorstep, he thinks his prayers have been answered.

But the more Arion tries to keep Angel close, the more her fear drives her away. If they are ever going to have a chance for a future, they’ll first have to deal with the past that hasn’t forgotten her any more than she’s forgotten it–and Arion will have to learn how to let her go.

Review

Angel is running away from her past and finds herself, dripping wet, on the doorsteps of Axel, but she knows him only as Arion. They met almost in another life, when they were just two players in an online game. The missions, the time together and maybe a good dose of reciprocal “attraction”(clearly not physical) have ensured that the friendship between them pass to the next level. But can there be anything more if they don’t know and they live so far away? That’s what was wondered Angel when she decides to date someone who is not Arion and decides to keep it a secret to the boy. And now, a year after she left the game without any explanation and with a relationship, which weighs heavily on her shoulders, she finds herselfs there, where perhaps she should have been from the beginning.

Before I even read the novel, I had made my own personal idea of what it was about the plot, I thought that it was almost a simple love story, maybe a little troubled, born online. In fact, this novel tells much more: the past of Angel is something that is not easy to leave behind. And although her life has become a hell, because of the man that was supposed to simply love her, she had the strength to say no and to escape to Arion, maybe the only one able to get her out of the abyss in which has fallen. I found both interesting characters though sometimes their uncertainty and reactions were a bit too forced for my taste. Angel is a wounded girl, very young, which is desperately looking for a way to fix up her life while Arion has just managed to put it back on track, after suffering the lack of Angel. The secondary characters, although very present, almost pass in the second floor in front of these two characters and their story.

The story is told from the point of view of Angel and from that of Arion and I appreciated both points of view without distinction. Perhaps I was disappointed that has not seen much more of the early stages of their friendship, as it grew up, but the necessary flashback went to fill in the more important narrative gasps.

There is no doubt that it is well written and also very addictive, but mostly this book ends with a worthy finale, then cliffhanger free. You wonder if the two eventually succeed to be together, despite the many adventures and their pasts?

Then you’ll have to read the book! 😉
