Questo Natale ho avuto la fortuna di viaggiare e tra un volo e l’altro sono riuscita a divorare questo romanzo, che mi aveva segnalato la mia collega Anncleire di Please Another Book. Si tratta del primo libro di una trilogia dal nome “The Lone City”, il cui secondo libro uscirà a fine anno.
This Christmas I was lucky enough to travel and, between flights, I was able to devour this novel, recommended by my wonderful colleague Anncleire of Please Another Book. This is the first book in a trilogy called “The Lone City” , whose second book will be released later this year.

Violet è decisamente la protagonista giusta per un romanzo simile: generosa, dolce e gentile in un mondo che tira fuori il peggio dalle giovani come lei. La sua vita precedente è l’esatto opposto di quello che le aspetta, ma ha le idee chiare e per nessun motivo dimenticherà ciò che è stato prima. Insieme a lei seguiamo le vicende di altre giovani surrogate come la sua migliore amica Raven, forse il mio personaggio preferito, che si ritrova a dover lottare ancor di più di Violet.
La giovane surrogata capirà presto che il mondo sfavillante del Jewel nasconde lotte intestine e giochi di potere. Tutto è nelle mani delle donne delle famiglie più potenti e lei è sola in un luogo di cui non conosce le regole. Ad aiutarla arriverà Lucien, il suo preparatore durante l’asta (Lucien, chi? cit. Cinna), su cui Violet ripone tutte le speranze. Ma ci sarà anche spazio per l’amore tra le braccia dell’accompagnatore della nipote della Duchessa Ash.
Violet si troverà presto a dover scegliere tra la felicità e la libertà e, nel finale, troverà un aiutante inaspettato.

Il concetto centrale del romanzo, una umanità che non è in grado di procreare più, mi ha affascinata molto. Non è troppo originale, perché potrei citare molti altri libri/film con una trama simile, ma è trattato in modo nuovo. L’idea di aggiungere un tocco ‘magico’ con i poteri è stata vincente, così come l’inserire la nobiltà, i bei vestiti e le feste. D’altronde le atmosfere di palazzo hanno sempre un loro fascino.
Non mi è piaciuto l’insta-love. Non ci posso far niente, l’amore a prima vista deve essere giocato bene per essere apprezzato in un romanzo e qui è davvero troppo affrettato.
Un’altra nota negativa riguarda il worldbuilding. In "The Jewel” tutto è molto accennato e si sente la mancanza di molti dettagli e spiegazioni, anche se devo dire che alcune cose vengono svelate lungo il romanzo. Avrei voluto saperne di più sull’universo di The Lone City, e spero che i prossimi libri sappiano rispondere alle domande che hanno affollato la mia mente dopo la lettura.
“The Jewel” è un libro che si legge tutto d’un fiato, consigliato, in particolare, agli amanti delle distopie.

Violet Lasting is meant to be a surrogate. Being a surrogate in Lone City means to be little more than a living incubator with some privilege in the hands of the wealthiest families. In the Jewel, the area where the nobles live, in fact, no one is able to procreate freely and the unpleasant task falls on the shoulders of young girls as Violet, who are auctioned. Each one will have a number and, for the best among them, tenders’ battle will be opened between the richest women in the city.
When Violet becomes #197, she still does not know what to expect in the months ahead. She does not even know that her skills have become already sought-after among the contenders at the auction and that her price will rise. But the Duchess of Lake, her future mistress, has ambitious plans for her and can not wait to put them into practice.

Violet is definitely the right protagonist for this novel: generous, sweet and kind in a world that brings out the worst from young people like her. Her previous life is the exact opposite of what she is going to experience, but she has clear ideas and for any reason she is not going to forget what was before. Along with her we follow the stories of other young surrogates like her best friend Raven, maybe my favorite character, who finds herself having to struggle even more to Violet.
The young surrogate will soon understand that the sparkling world of Jewel hides infighting and power games. Everything is in the hands of the women of the most powerful families and she is alone in a place where she does not know the rules. Lucien, her trainer during the auction (Lucien, who? Cit. Cinna), will come to help her and Violet will put every hopen on him. But there will also be time for love in the arms of Ash, the companion of the Duchess’s niece.
Violet will soon have to choose between happiness and freedom and, in the end, she will find a unexpected helper.

The main concept of the novel, a humanity that is unable to procreate, fascinated me a lot. It is not too original, because I could mention many other books/films with a similar plot, but is treated in a new way. The idea to add a little ‘magic’ with the powers was winning, as well as enter the nobles, with beautiful clothes and parties. Besides, "palace atmosphere” always has its charm.
I did not like the insta-love. It is not my fault, for me love at first sight have to be played well in order to be appreciated in a novel and here is really too rushed.
Another negative note is about the worldbuilding. In “The Jewel” everything is very alluded and I feel the lack of many details and explanations, although I must say that some things are revealed along the novel. I wanted to know more about the universe of Lone City, and I hope that next books are able to answer the questions that crowded my mind after reading it.
“The Jewel” is a book to read in one breath, recommended, in particular, to dystopian fans.
